The Dutch Society for Modern Greek and the European Movement in the Netherlands (EBN) have been for long time now discussing the idea to start a media focal point for alternative, more in-depth readings of the Greek news, meant to feed Dutch journalism with broader background information and alternative readings of news coming from Greece.

It all became eminent at a time that Greece was negotiating with their lenders. It was at those times of Greek-EU negotiations that  journalists seemed to be ill informed, basically because they did not have access to Greek analyses/do not read Greek/are not familiar with a lot of the backgrounds to the various crises.

The Dutch Society for Modern Greek had already contemplated for a while to start an online ‘connector’ of various people who could serve as ‘mediators/translators/back ground experts’ for Dutch journalists who normally do not have much time to inform themselves properly.

During the March 12 ‘We Are All Greeks’ debate of the EBN in Pakhuis de Zwijger a similar plan came up. As a result, Godelieve van Heteren & Tatiana Markaki joined forces to see if they can work this out with the help of their peers and other friends. And so it began, the Nederlands-Griekse Mediacirkel.
