De Griekse correspondent gelooft nog in de \u2018European dream\u2019<\/h2>\n

De Nederlandse media zijn er niet\u00a0in geslaagd een genuanceerd beeld van de Griekse crisis neer te zetten, vindt de\u00a0Griekse correspondent Nikos Koulousios. Hij ziet het daarom als zijn taak de situatie in het\u00a0land van een andere kant te belichten.<\/p>\n

Lui, onverantwoordelijk en verwend<\/strong>
\nKoulousios kwam in 1999 als uitwisselingsstudent naar Den Haag, ge\u00efntrigeerd door het liberale imago van Nederland. Hij besloot hier te blijven. In al die jaren is zijn Griekse temperament misschien wat afgezwakt, maar verder houdt hij zo veel mogelijk vast aan zijn identiteit \u2013 ook nu het imago van de Grieken niet al te best is. \u201cIk beschouw mezelf boven alles als Europeaan, maar door alle kritiek voel ik me de laatste tijd wel wat meer Grieks dan voorheen. Een paar jaar geleden kon ik me nog kwaad maken om hoe de Grieken worden afgeschilderd: lui, onverantwoordelijk en verwend. Nu zie ik in dat het geen zin heeft om me erover op te winden. Het is veel beter om naar elkaars mening te luisteren.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIk beschouw mezelf vooral als Europeaan, maar voel me vanwege alle kritiek\u00a0steeds meer Griek\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hellas Pindakaas<\/strong>
\nKoulousios is wekelijks te horen in Hellas Pindakaas, een Griekstalig radioprogramma op SALTO\/Wereld FM. \u00a0\u201cIk wil graag een positieve show neerzetten, met leuke gasten en vrolijke muziek, zodat Grieken die net in Nederland zijn zich thuis voelen. Maar natuurlijk besteed ik ook aandacht aan de actualiteiten. Ik zie het als mijn taak om een meer genuanceerd geluid over de Griekse crisis te laten horen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nederlandse media vertellen niet het hele verhaal<\/strong>
\nDe meeste internationale media hebben volgens Koulousios niet het volledige verhaal van de Griekse schuldencrisis verteld. \u201cZe hebben geprobeerd Griekenland weg te zetten als een verloren zaak, een land dat geen hulp meer verdient. Voor de regeringen werd het daardoor lastig hun bevolking te laten inzien dat het Griekse probleem eigenlijk een Europees probleem is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMensen beseffen onvoldoende\u00a0dat het Griekse probleem eigenlijk een Europees probleem is\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Over het algemeen geeft Koulousios\u00a0ook de Nederlandse media een onvoldoende, uitzonderingen als NRC en Pauw daargelaten. \u201cDoor gebrekkige berichtgeving beseffen veel Nederlanders niet dat \u2018hun\u2019 belastinggeld helemaal niet naar het Griekse volk is gegaan; een groot gedeelte is direct doorgesluisd naar de Duitse en Franse banken, om te voorkomen dat die bankroet zouden gaan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Idool<\/strong>
\nDat Koulousios zo veel waarde hecht aan het vertellen van het echte verhaal, verklaart misschien ook zijn antwoord op de vraag wie hij het allerliefst zou interviewen: niet Merkel, Dijsselbloem of een andere Europese hot shot<\/em>, maar de (inmiddels overleden) correspondent Frans van Hasselt. \u201cHij was de journalist die ik graag zou willen zijn. Mijn idool. Hij beheerste het Nederlands en het Grieks, hij maakte verhalen met diepgang en kende de nuances, omdat hij decennia lang\u00a0in Griekenland zat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Griekse media: subjectief en\u00a0misleidend
\n<\/strong>Over de Griekse media is Koulousios evenmin te spreken: \u201cDie hebben zich echt verschrikkelijk opgesteld!\u00a0De meeste media zijn in handen van corporaties die ook andere zakelijke belangen hebben, bijvoorbeeld in de wegen- of scheepsbouw.\u00a0Zij hebben er baat bij de waarheid af te zwakken en feiten te verdraaien.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDe Griekse media waren echt verschrikkelijk\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Koulousios is van mening dat bepaalde\u00a0Griekse media het volk bewust gemanipuleerd hebben. Zo vertelt hij dat de zelfmoordcijfers<\/a> in Griekenland tijdens de crisis omhoog geschoten zijn, maar dat de grote Griekse media daarover zwijgen. Erger nog: \u201cEen aantal Griekse journalisten heeft een training gehad van het IMF, waarin ze leerden hoe ze de Trojka zo gunstig mogelijk konden afschilderen. Dit gerucht ging al een hele tijd in Griekenland, maar nu is het bevestigd door de voormalig Griekse gezant bij het IMF, Panagiotis Roumeliotis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brain drain
\n<\/strong>Ook al lijkt de \u2018Grexit\u2019 voorlopig afgewend, Griekenland staat voor gigantische uitdagingen.\u00a0De jeugdwerkloosheid schommelt rond de vijftig procent<\/a>. Niet gek dat hoogopgeleide, talentvolle Grieken massaal het land verlaten \u2013 Koulousios zou het zelfde doen. Hij vreest wel dat de Griekse \u2018brain drain\u2019<\/a> een enorm\u00a0probleem wordt: \u201cHet Griekse hoger onderwijs is gratis, dus het is extra zuur als iedereen met een diploma vertrekt. Het is onmogelijk Griekenland weer op te bouwen met enkel\u00a0gepensioneerden en ongeschoolde mensen. Hopelijk komen de Griekse jongeren terug zodra het beter gaat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Europese droom
\n<\/strong>Als Koulousios in de gelegenheid was geweest zijn stem uit te brengen in het referendum, zou\u00a0hij zeker tegen de voorstellen van de internationale geldschieters hebben gestemd. Niet omdat hij tegen de EU is, maar omdat hij meende dat het voorstel Griekenland nog meer schade zou toebrengen.<\/p>\n

\u201cIk zou in het referendum tegen hebben gestemd, maar geloof wel in het Europese ideaal\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Koulousios houdt hoop voor de EU. \u201cToen ik naar Nederland kwam, geloofde ik echt in de \u2018Europese droom\u2019. Ook al gaat het wat mij betreft nu de verkeerde kant op met Europa \u2013 de EU krijgt steeds meer lelijke kanten, met extreem-rechtse partijen en eurosceptici \u2013 ik wil mijn droom nog niet opgeven. Ik geloof nog steeds in het Europese ideaal.\u201d<\/p>\n
